Hello, everyone.
As trite as it sounds, it’s hard to believe we’re wrapping up summer already. Dunkin’ Donuts releases its pumpkin spice coffees and donuts tomorrow (not that I checked the date or anything), so you know it’s the end of locust season. And the leaves out my office window are already changing color; ironically, while nature slows down, we’ll be cranking into gear with the back-to-school crowd.
This will be a short newsletter, as my pleas remain the same:
- Please submit your best recipes for our cookbook fundraiser. As a shall-remain-nameless tutor said, no cake mix recipes. We want the real deal. Please also ask your students for recipes to include as we plan to have a chapter reserved for them.
- Please go to greatnonprofits.org and write a review for the Literacy Council of Carroll County. We’re still at five reviews, so you guys must not like us that much! Let’s remedy that, shall we? Free pumpkin donuts for everyone tomorrow. Send Sam the bill.*
- Please send me any student achievement stories you may have so I can highlight them in the future.
- Please let me know of any book/ website/ material recommendations I can share with everyone in our newsletters.
In other news, I’ve left fliers around town for the group ESOL class we hope to have at the end of September. If it runs, I’ 11 need some help getting that off the ground. I have a short list of names who have volunteered to assist but no teacher as of yet.
Also, our annual golf tournament takes place on Friday the 22nd at Quail Valley m Littlestown, PA. Last call for volunteers.
In closing, there’s a neat site you may not be aware of called Wikimedia Commons that has a Picture of the Day (as well as Media of the Day) that you could use for images during your tutoring sessions. The New York Times also has an online page called “What’s Going On in This Picture?” which updates weekly during the school year and has a space for commenting what you think is happening in the image. On Thursdays more information about the picture is revealed, and students can check back to see how close their guesses were. These work very well as ice breakers, warm ups, conversation practice, and writing prompts. Give them a try as fits with your student(s).

* For legal purposes, the free pumpkin donut offer was a joke. It’s not Tutor Appreciation Day yet.
